Who needs a REIT Mutual Fund?

  For some investors, a domestic real estate portfolio may for the cornerstone of their real estate strategy because of its familiarity and, despite recent set-backs, has exhibited historic stability over the long-term. If you're just getting started with investing in real estate, consider a fund like the Wells Dow Jones U.S REIT Index Fund which invests in the broad U.S. real estate equity market.

REITs may actually reduce risk while increasing returns when used as part of a broad asset allocation strategy in investment portfolios, over a long-term period.


Each of these investment vehicles is different, and they differ in a variety of ways. For example: Real estate investments can be illiquid. The fund's concentrated holdings in the real estate sector of the stock market make it less diversified across industries than many mutual funds; therefore, changes in the economy effecting real estate will usually result in greater impact on the fund's performance.

Be advised that investments in real estate and in REITs have various risks including tenant vacancies and devaluations based upon adverse economic and regulatory changes.

As of May 1, 2009 the Fund will track the Dow Jones U.S. Select Real Estate Investment Trust Index (having the same membership requirements and methodology as the Dow Jones Wilshire U.S. REIT Index (DJW U.S. Index.) The Fund exchanged its holdings to parallel the DJW U.S.Index as of December 5, 2007; from its inception date until December 4, 2007, the fund positioned its holdings to parallel the S&P REIT Index.
